A kolaj/collage is a work composed of a variety of juxtaposed materials and forms, that come together to create a new whole from its unlikely elements. I can find no better way to describe the environment in which I find myself. Istanbul is a city that has continually built itself on top of its old self. Always manipulated by its inhabitants; shifted, dragged, broken, rebuilt, enriched, expanded, and stretched…it still reveals evidence of its previous layers, its underlying soul. The more memories I accumulate throughout my time in this organism of a city, the richer and more layered the images become in my mind. Kolaj is my portrayal of the stratified and surreal nature of life in Istanbul and the life of the city itself.
